Only a few months ago, it is understood Barrenjoey-advised Blackmores went through a strenuous round of talks with a Japanese strategic player, who was keen to gobble up the group and take it off the ASX-boards. The Japanese player wasn’t the only suitor on the scene. Just about every big private equity group in the region has a file on Blackmores, opened when they were looking for Australian ways to play the Chinese consumer boom a few years back, and kept open by recent instability at the company.
The question is whether Marcus Blackmore, son of the company’s founder Maurice Blackmore and its long-time boss, is still keen for a deal. He’s backfollowing former chair Anne Templeman-Jones’ departure in November.
