Comac, China's state-owned aircraft manufacturer, aims to expand its C919 jet's operations internationally, challenging Boeing and Airbus's dominance.
China is stepping up its efforts to challenge Boeing and Airbus 's dominance in the aircraft market. The state-run manufacturer of China 's first domestically produced passenger jet, Comac , is seeking certifications for its C919 aircraft to operate internationally. The heavily subsidized C919 , which made its inaugural commercial flight in 2023, is currently used on domestic routes by China 's three major state-owned airlines: Air China , China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines.
From this month, China Eastern will operate the C919 on a regular commercial route between Hong Kong and Shanghai, marking its first international service. Yang Yang, Comac's deputy general manager of marketing and sales, stated the company aims to have the single-aisle aircraft flying in Southeast Asia by 2026 and to obtain European certification as early as this year. He emphasized the company's goal to thoroughly test the aircraft domestically before expanding its operations internationally. The C919 is a key project in President Xi Jinping's initiative for China to ascend the technology value chain and ultimately compete with the Western aviation duopoly. Boeing's recent financial difficulties, delivery delays, and industry-wide supply chain issues, including engine and component shortages, have presented an opportunity for newcomers like Comac. Global demand for new aircraft over the next two decades is projected to be 42,430, with approximately 80% being single-aisle aircraft, according to an Airbus forecast. Aviation consultancy IBA predicts that Comac can increase its C919 production from one to 11 aircraft per month by 2040, potentially delivering nearly 2,000 units by that time
