British intelligence agencies are warning that allowing China to build a new embassy near the Tower of London could compromise sensitive communication lines. Concerns center around the site's proximity to critical fiber-optic cables that form a vital part of the UK's internet network and communications infrastructure.
Security sources claim the site for the new Chinese embassy could compromise the City's sensitive communication lines
Publicly available mapping data shows the proposed site sits close to three major data centres, adding to concerns. The letter states: “The proposed site sits over sensitive communication cabling, power lines, and is positioned directly adjacent to a key motorway artery. Following a series of successful attacks on US telecoms infrastructure attributed to China, these are not trivial considerations.
China argues in response that such claims are “totally groundless and unreliable”. A spokesperson for its embassy said: “Anti-China elements are always keen on fabricating facts, slandering and attacking China.” Duncan-Smith said: “Too often the realistic evidence-based concerns of the security services have been ignored. The reality is that fibre-optic cables can be accessed by China despite their warnings is tragic. We must in the UK listen to the security services, the time to act is now.”
