China conducted military drills near Taiwan, prompting condemnation from the United States and the European Union.
In the latest geopolitical escalation this month, China began military drills in the Taiwan Strait on Monday, dispatching army, navy, air force, and rocket force troops to the democratically-governed Taiwan , drawing rebukes from the U.S. and the EU.
” Last week, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te vowed to uphold Taiwan’s self-governing status in his national day speech saying he would “uphold the commitment to resist annexation or encroachment upon our sovereignty.” Earlier this year, China also performed military drills near Taiwan, as a warning to the president who was sworn in in May. The Chinese military drills today are viewed as a response to last week’s speech of the Taiwanese president.
