Chinese-Australians are increasingly positive about Australia and democracy, as relations between Canberra and Beijing improve.

Chinese-Australians have a diminished view of President Xi Jinping, while their support for democracy as the best system of government is rising, according to a new survey that comes against a backdrop of improving ties between Beijing and Canberra.

About 1.4 million people with Chinese ancestry live in Australia, making up 5.5 per cent of the population. The institute surveyed 1200 self-identified Chinese-Australians late last year as part of a multi-year project tracking the views of the diaspora. “One of the mistakes in the debate is to assume that everyone who has a connection to China is somehow connected to the Communist Party,” said the institute’s project director, Jennifer Hsu.

Dr Hsu suggested Mr Xi’s image had suffered following protests in China over harsh lockdown policies last year.
