Ying Wah first opened back in 1974
Back in 1974, the Ying Wah bar and restaurant first opened its doors on Woolton Street, Woolton Village and over the years has seen generations of loyal customers come through its doors. Originally opened by close family friend James Chan, the restaurant changed hands to Richard Ng in 1978, who ran the business with his wife, Pauline, for many years.
"My dad was short staffed, short of kitchen porters and I used to help out doing the dishes. I wasn't even tall enough - I used to stand on a stool. Today, the team serve everything from dim sum platters to salt and pepper combos, Szechwan dishes and more and continue to cater to 'what the customers like.' Simon said: "I've noticed the customers always stick to what they like.
"A lot of my school mates used to come in with their mums and dads and grandparents. It was good to see people who I knew. Even to this day, we’ve kept in touch." "Fowler used to come in for takeaways, McManaman, Phil Babb - a lot of the players came in. Paul Gascoigne, I served him. I was about 14 or 15 and I was star struck to see this worldwide player.
