A PhD student from China is facing trial accused of raping ten women in London. The defendant, Zhenhao Zou, denies all charges.
A young Chinese woman has recounted the horrifying experience of confronting a PhD student weeks after she alleges he raped her while she was intoxicated and unconscious in his south London residence. The victim, who remains anonymous due to legal constraints, revealed to Inner London Crown Court that she awoke to find Zhenhao Zou engaging in forceful sexual intercourse with her.
In a subsequent phone conversation, she stated, 'He said to me that he thought I was conscious at the time, but I didn't agree.' Mr. Zou, who came to the UK from China to pursue his studies at University College London (UCL), is currently on trial facing charges of raping 10 women, which he vehemently denies. The woman testified that she had initially met Mr. Zou in August 2021, and they had engaged in consensual sexual activity at his flat in Elephant and Castle. 'I felt that he was trying to keep our relationship as a sexual relationship, but I didn't want to do that,' she explained. Messages exchanged on the social media platform WeChat and presented to the jury revealed that Mr. Zou occasionally cited his demanding academic schedule as a reason for postponing their encounters. Their paths crossed again on September 13, 2021, when they joined friends for a meal at a popular hotpot restaurant named Haidilao in London's Chinatown. During a police interview played to the jury, the woman recounted how she consumed a significant amount of Jack Daniel's whiskey that evening and subsequently awoke to find Mr. Zou sexually assaulting her in his student accommodation. Through a videolink connection on Monday, she stated, 'At the time I lost my consciousness already.' She further described leaving his flat the next morning still under the influence of alcohol, expressing uncertainty about the events of the previous night and whether she had been sexually assaulted. Over time, anger and resentment grew as she realized the violation she had endured without her consent. On October 27th, a series of voice messages were exchanged between her and Mr. Zou, culminating in a text message from him stating, 'I did not do that thing.' The woman stated that during a WeChat call, she confronted Mr. Zou, proclaiming, 'I was in such a condition and yet you still did it to me.' Mr. Zou stands trial at Inner London Crown Court on 11 counts of rape against 10 distinct women, eight of whom remain unidentified by authorities.
