'Caring and spending time with the chickens will be a beautiful reminder of the past for many who recall their own families keeping chickens.'
A great conversation starter and a form of therapeutic interaction, chickens are more than just an average farm animal. To help stimulate mental engagement and physical activity, a Chorley care home have recently welcomed a flock of chickens to their village.
Mrs Claire Harrison, a local primary school teacher donated the chickens in to the care home a a part of the recent chicken hatching programme at her school, St. Paul’s C of E Primary School in Walkden. Team manager, Jo Bamford then donated the coop which have been a highly anticipated arrival for most living in the home.Amongst those most excited for the arrival of the chickens were residents with a background in farming, but it did seem to bring a smile to a lot of people's faces.
Hayley Rowson de Vares, the manager at Buckshaw Retirement Village said: "Claire’s generosity has created a wonderful opportunity for our village. The chickens will be placed centrally in our garden, becoming a vibrant hub of activity once the chicks are mature enough and the weather is suitable for their outdoor living.
