Celtic won the Scottish Premiership title as they beat Hearts 3-1. However, their victory did not come without criticism, with Chris Sutton hitting back.
The Hoops beat Hearts on the final game of the season to leapfrog the club and win the trophy in a dramatic match at Celtic Park.
However, many neutrals were far from happy about Celtic’s victory, including Simon Jordan, who claimed that their title triumph was simply “not exciting”. Going into the match on Saturday, anti-Celtic sentiment was already high as neutrals hoped for a different winner in the Scottish Premiership.
However, Celtic’s title victory for many was a repeat of the norm, as they won it for the fifth consecutive season despite the numerous challenges they had faced throughout the 2026-27 campaign. Taking to X on 16 May, Jordan took aim at Celtic after Hearts failed to see out their title ambitions. He said: “What a shame for Scottish football Hearts … nothing exciting or new about Celtic winning the league.
Everyone can go back to not caring about Scottish football again” I doubt you’d say it to Martin O’Neill’s face… what an embarrassing take anyway. Scottish people care about Scottish football and you can carry on not caring from London. This controversial take resulted in plenty of backlash, with Sutton quickly taking aim at the pundit for his criticism of Scottish football. He replied: “I doubt you’d say it to Martin O’Neill’s face… what an embarrassing take anyway.
Scottish people care about Scottish football and you can carry on not caring from London. ”The 74-year-old is currently set to depart at the end of the campaign after only being appointed as an interim after Wilfried Nancy’s sacking. Their league victory was no doubt a highly impressive achievement, given the state of the club when O’Neill walked through the doors in January.
On top of this, the manager could still lift the Scottish Cup trophy when they face Dunfermline in the final next weekend. Multiple other candidates have been linked to Celtic in case O’Neill does opt to leave in the summer.
Nevertheless, no matter what the manager decides to do, he will no doubt depart as a legend once more after the fabulous work he has achieved this season.
