EXCLUSIVE Christine McGuinness’s Christmas Day plans with ex Paddy - nuggets for lunch as kids come first
After putting a difficult year behind her, Christine McGuinness is looking forward to 2023. And opening her heart for our festive shoot, the documentary-maker and author lifts the lid on what she describes as the "best and worst" year of her life.
Over the past 12 months, the author and autism ambassador has conquered many of her fears, made new friends and took part in a physically and mentally challenging TV show called The Games, something she’d previously have found difficult due to her autism. “Patrick and I were together for 15 years,” she says. “I wouldn’t say it was a failed relationship or a failed marriage – it was a good, long relationship. But unfortunately that’s over now and we’re just going to carry on and be the best parents we can be.”
“I would never let the children be aware of anything other than us being happy and alright, because they’re so young and innocent.” “Obviously, his work does take him away, but whenever he is around, he’s there with the children. I want them to know their dad and have good times with him. When there are children involved, you’ve got to take your own feelings out of it and put the children first and that’s what we’re both trying to do.”
“Of course, it’s been difficult at times,” she confesses. “I think it would be for anybody in this situation, but when there’s children there you’ve just got to keep going. There’s no time to get down. I have my moments, but I try to do it in private.” Be the first to meet the latest showbiz babies, see the most sought after wedding pictures of the year, or take a guided tour around your favourite star's lavish multi-million pound home - all for free! So, what did she learn while filming the show? “I always felt like I never fully understood who I was, because I’m a bit of a chameleon and I’ll change myself – the way I dress, the way I act around different people – just to try to fit in,” she says.
“After a diagnosis, you do come away and look at life differently. Although you question things a lot, you also get answers too, like, ‘This is why I’m feeling this,’ instead of, ‘Why do I feel like this?’ You can take a bit of pressure off yourself and go, ‘This is why’.” Another positive to take from the year is the friendships she’s made. Christine has previously admitted she finds it hard to form relationships with others, but during our chat she tells us she keeps in touch with many of the celebs she’s befriended during her stints on recent reality shows.
“Just by doing that, they’re coping so much better. They’re maturing, and they’re learning how to control themselves and manage their own feelings better.” “I don’t think they should have to fit in with tradition or what everybody else has. I think your Christmas dinner should be whatever you’d like to eat and I want them to enjoy it,” she says. “If they want chicken nuggets and chips, then that’s what I’m going to give them.”
