Up to 100 million red crabs have begun their annual march to the ocean ahead of mating season on the remote Australian island, after dry weather delayed last year's migration.
About 100 million red crabs are heading towards the coast as part of their seasonal breeding period on Christmas Island .Millions of red crabs are emerging from their burrows and the forests of Christmas Island in what is expected to be one largest migrations in recent years.
Last year's delayed season prompted concerns from a leading expert about a reduced survival rate for the crabs. "The population has kind of come back up and it's almost back to 1980s levels at the moment."The red crab mating season typically occurs about October or November, right after a period of heavy rainfall.
