Former Broome bishop Christopher Saunders has briefly appeared in a WA court to face two new charges for alleged historical offences. Saunders, 74, is accused of sexually assaulting a man in 2016 when the alleged victim was 21 or 22. The senior Catholic cleric arrived alone and ignored journalists, saying nothing outside court on Monday. Saunders was already facing dozens of charges, months after 7 NEWS revealed the details of a secret investigation by The Vatican.
Saunders was arrested at his home in February by child sexual assault detectives. He was charged with two counts of sexual penetration without consent, 14 counts of unlawful and indecent assault, and three counts of person in authority indecently dealing with a child . On Monday, the court was told more than 200 witnesses might appear, which is the same as the mammoth trial of Claremont murderer Bradley Robert Edwards. Saunders has previously indicated he will plead not guilty.
