A study of 77 male hockey players reveals a 96.4% CTE prevalence, highlighting the link between play duration and increased risk of chronic encephalopathy.

By Priyanjana Pramanik, MSc.Reviewed by Danielle Ellis, B.Sc.Dec 6 2024 Study of 77 male hockey players finds 96.4% of professionals had CTE, with risk and severity increasing with each year played

Background Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a brain disease caused by repetitive head impacts . It is a neurodegenerative condition that is primarily seen in contact sports but can only be diagnosed by examining the brain after death, characterized by distinct tubulin-associated unit protein pathology that differentiates it from other conditions.

A 2021 study found that 6 out of 11 athletes who played ice hockey at an elite level and died had CTE. Another study combining ice hockey and athletes in the Canadian Football League did not find a clear link between CTE and position played or the length of their careers, likely because of a limited sample size.

Related StoriesResearchers also collected clinical data from medical records to assess daily functioning and diagnose dementia using specific criteria. They then conducted neuropathological analyses to measure phosphorylated tau across 11 regions of the brain. Statistical analyses were used to analyze the relationship of years of hockey played with cumulative tau burden and diagnosis of CTE. Models were adjusted to position played, number of concussions, and age.
