Former finance minister seeks to lead governing Liberal party after prime minister steps aside
Canada’s former finance minister Chrystia Freeland is running to be the country’s next prime minister after Justin Trudeau stepped down this month. Freeland, a Toronto-based MP, posted on X that she would officially launch her bid to become leader of the governing Liberal party on Sunday. “I’m running to fight for Canada,” she said. Her announcement comes a day after former Bank of England governor Mark Carney announced his intention to lead the party.
In an op-ed published in the Toronto Star on Friday, Freeland — a former senior journalist at the FT — wrote, “At a time when President Donald Trump is threatening our country, it’s time to stand up for Canada.” She warned: “Florida orange growers, Michigan dishwasher manufacturers and Wisconsin dairy farmers: brace yourselves. Canada is America’s largest export market — bigger than China, Japan, the UK and France combined.
