The Church of England is gathering at what has been described as a time of "unprecedented crisis" for the first General Synod since the archbishop of Canterbury's resignation. The Church of England’s 500-member governing body will begin a tense five-day session starting Monday amid a crisis of trust in the institution. It follows a series of sexual abuse scandals, resulting in the unprecedented resignation of Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Mr Cottrell told the Times newspaper last week that he believes "many people both within the Church and outside the Church are disgusted by what they read and we would be very foolish if we didn't take account of that". He has resisted calls to resign, previously saying he would "do what I can" to bring about independent scrutiny of safeguarding in the Church.
