Bosses at Merlin insist there is plenty of life left in the world of cinema and they are ready to lead a renaissance in Ayr.
The team bidding to revive Ayr's former Odeon Cinema say community spirit will play a key role in its rebirth.
The firm, based in Penzance on England's south-west coast, insist it was love at first sight when getting the chance to snap up the Art Deco structure. Now they hope the public will back their vision to put Ayr's cinema scene up in lights again. "Our owner is committed to traditional, vintage cinema - beautiful buildings that need preserved and looked after for the community. It was a case of 'oh my gosh let's get in the car'. We pretty much followed the estate agent up the road as they came here to measure up.
Merlin, an independent cinema chain, now owns 19 sites from Penzance to Thurso. Ayr will become just their second foray into Scotland when it re-opens as Astoria, but the company is confident they can offer something different to the mass market offering.
