The chief executive of the charity, Andrew Redfern, now says his pleas to Government on the need for a key funding programme to return are being met with 'incomprehension'.
Programmes to prevent homelessness and support those on the streets in Nottingham are being "dismantled", according to the head of a major charity in the city. Framework, which works across the East Midlands, said earlier in the year the number of rough sleepers it was working with had increased by more than 100 over the last two years.
Speaking at the site in Hyson Green, Mr Redfern said: "Homelessness is increasing across the country and also in Nottingham, and that includes rough sleeping. That's because the systems of support that used to be available to prevent people from becoming homeless are gradually being dismantled. That's been happening over the past 10 to 15 years.
He said: "It was highly effective, it saved a lot more money than it ever cost, but as part of austerity we lost it and we're seeing the consequences of that. Until we can persuade Government to put that programme back, we'll need to have initiatives like this which in a sense only reach a small proportion of the people who are in need, but it's better than nothing."
Speaking at the time, Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Felicity Buchan, said: "Everyone should have a safe and secure home. This Government is determined to prevent homelessness and to get vulnerable families and individuals the support they need."
