The notices started going up at the old National Archives site near Cuddy Park declaring that all people living there must be gone by April 30.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage officials began posting abatement notices at the city’s largest homeless camp Wednesday, something those experiencing homelessness and living in the camp were not happy about.
After speaking with two women who lived at the makeshift encampment, both were concerned for those living there and wondered if there was a place to go. Heinrich says she also has been staying at Cuddy for about 7 months and has family members that stay at the park too.A federal circuit court ruling forbids communities from clearing homeless camps unless the community has shelter spaces for those being moved. But those rules would not apply in certain cases where public safety or health are significantly affected.
Glatt prefaced his response by emphasizing the notice comes as the municipality’s winter plan has failed to provide enough housing and shelter to those that need it, as well as failing to meet fundamental human needs of all of its residents.
