Laptops purchased around five years ago are now causing IT issues for Nottingham's council housing team
Nottingham City Council is spending £270,000 on new laptops for its housing staff as the ones bought around five years ago are causing "IT issues." The financially struggling authority has allocated a total of £400,000 over the next three years to replace laptops used by 600 staff in its housing services team.
Divided amongst 600 units, the spending therefore equates to around £450 per laptop, though the council says it is saving money by purchasing them in bulk. The spending is being funded by the council's Housing Revenue Account - a ring-fenced pot of money largely funded by rent and service charges from tenants.
In a report published on Thursday , the city council says: "The existing laptops were originally purchased in 2018/19 so are getting to the age where they are causing IT issues and speed issues. This is leading to lack of efficiency for housing services colleagues."There is £400,000 allocated in reserve funds over three years for this project.
Nottingham City Homes , a company completely owned by Nottingham City Council but previously operating at arms length from the authority, was folded back into the council last year. The Labour-led authority says that replacing each laptop as it becomes unusable would cause "far more disruption to users and put more strain on the corporate IT service."
