The Houston Public Library has announced plans to reopen the Eleanor Freed-Montrose Neighborhood Library in a press release. The announcement comes two weeks after it closed for what was expected to be a relocation effort over safety concerns.
The announcement comes two weeks after it closed. The City of Houston was expected to begin a relocation effort for the library, but it will now be reopening at the same location. The library is slated to reopen its doors on April 15, with operating hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The City of Houston is hosting a “mini event” to celebrate the reopening at 10 a.m. on the opening day. The event will include short remarks from city officials, story and craft events, a 120-year anniversary limited-edition card sign-up and also book giveaways.Specific areas of the library will be unavailable to the public over safety concerns, but customers will still have access to amenities like books, meeting spaces, computers and outdoor Wi-Fi.
“The Freed-Montrose Library temporarily closed last month because of facility safety concerns. Following the closure, Mayor John Whitmire asked members of the library administration to meet with stakeholders and create a plan to safely reopen the building and welcome back the public to a beloved space for learning, discovery and cultural enrichment,” the City of Houston said in a statement announcing the reopening.
