Fireworks and live music were among the elements of the iconic festival cancelled by Nottingham City Council in 2024

Nottingham City Council has been accused of trying to 'restrict' attendance at the Riverside Festival after suggesting a neighbouring authority should contribute towards it. The city council's deputy leader says "the other side of the river" benefits from Riverside just as much, but in response Rushcliffe Borough Council says it would never try and "control or restrict attendance" at its own events.

Should Nottingham City Council have managed its finances better over the last 10 years? Let us know here Councillor Abby Brennan said: "Rushcliffe delivers a vibrant events programme including Proms in the Park, Lark in the Park, Christmas Lights Switch On with its low noise fireworks finale and many more. Thousands of local residents from across the borough, Nottinghamshire and Nottingham enjoy these great events.

In its latest budget plans for the coming financial year, published on Monday , the city council now says that all its future events will either have to be commercial or cost neutral. Asked whether that means events like Bonfire Night will never return, given the costs of staging it have reportedly doubled since 2019, Councillor Radford suggested it would only be possible with external support.
