The city's health department again pointed to concerns over health and safety as staff began reposting 72-hour abatement notices at the site on Monday.

The Anchorage Health Department again cited concerns over public health and safety as reason for dismantling the campANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage Health Department said Monday that the city will begin formally abating a sprawling downtown homeless camp located off of 2nd Avenue on Friday. AHD officials said the clearing and cleaning of the area will happen into the weekend, with 72-hour abatement signs slated to be posted on Tuesday.

“We’ll let campers know they do have an additional 72 hours,” Johnson said. “We’ll offer shelter space, just really connect people with resources before this green space is closed down.” She said there are also issues with ecological balance and health in the area. Human waste, among other biological hazards, could be seen in labeled buckets right next to the camp, at least as of Monday afternoon.

Patrick Bittner, another homeless resident of the camp, said he has been living at there for a month. He also lacks any interest in going to a shelter.Cathy Hiebert, an Anchorage resident who has lived at a property above the green space for more than two decades, said she has concerns of her own, and worries about campers starting a fire that could spread to nearby residences.

As for Johnson, she has been encouraging those living in the camp to get to a shelter. She also said that if anyone is seeking treatment — for example, for substance abuse — there are beds available for recovery.
