Andrew Slorance, 49, died at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow on December 5 2020, with the cause of death attributed to Covid.

The widow of a cancer patient who died from Covid-19 at a scandal-hit superhospital said he was a “dead man walking” due to infection risks, an inquiry heard.

Mrs Slorance said: “4A being a Covid ward and Covid patients potentially having other infections – he was a dead man walking when he walked into 4A.” She said most of her knowledge came from her husband as medics had taken her phone number down wrongly. Three reports were issued – a case review by NHS Lothian, branded “unusual” as it did not look at case notes, a review by NHSGGC after intervention from ex-first minister Nicola Sturgeon, and one from Health Improvement Scotland which Mrs Slorance said had a “distinct lack of information about Aspergillus”.

“I cannot understand how a bone marrow transplant patient acquiring two hospital-acquired infections cannot be seen as an adverse event.” Meanwhile, the widow of another cancer patient branded it “irony” that he had felt safe in QEUH, the inquiry heard. Mrs Dynes said: “The hospital said they didn’t know what Tony died from apart from cancer. To say that Tony’s death was from cancer, I question now. Because the hospital was already under scrutiny, in hindsight, I can only question why they didn’t tell me.
