Pundits steamed in after McIllroy's barren run in Majors extended to a decade with his whole game under the microscope.
Angry Shane Lowry claims his "blood boils" over the stick Rory McIlroy's revered caddy Harry Diamond received in the wake of the Irishman's heartbreaking US Open loss.
Pundits steamed in after McIllroy's barren run in Majors extended to a decade with his whole game under the microscope after a pair of poor putts allowed Bryson DeChambeau in to win his second US Open. Leading coach Hank Haney and Golf Channel specialist Smylie Kaufman both queried Diamond's role in the final round. But Lowry – who won the 2019 Open at Portrush – is seething that McIlroy's bagman has been turned into the fall guy.
Speaking ahead The Open, the Irishman said: “It's the one thing that really drives me insane. I watched Rory and watched him miss those two putts and not win and then you have people criticising him and Harry which is, I mean, it really makes my blood boil. Harry Diamond is the best person in the world to caddy for Rory McIlroy and I see it week in, week out. He works harder than any of the caddies out here, he's always here before him, walking the courses.
“He's there for him and, even though he's not in the middle of the tee box like all these caddies who want to be on TV talking loud and telling Rory what to do, he still makes his voice heard. Until you live that moment and that situation you never know how it is.” Follow Record Sport on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond.
