Concerns have been raised over the University of Nottingham's new campus amid claims the huge project is quickly heading over budget. It has been claimed the university's project to turn the former HMRC offices at Castle Meadow into its new city campus has already spent nearly all of its budget - despite the fact it is scheduled for completion in 2025.
The Russell Group institution spent more than £36 million to buy the 32,500 square metre site in 2021 and has spent the last few months refitting the inside of the office buildings to form the future home of its business school. The head of the project said £45 million had been invested into the campus as of July last year, but explained this had not all been invested by the university itself.
The University of Nottingham acknowledged it had tightened financial spending, but said this would not discourage it from investing in new facilities. It did not deny the UCU's claim on whether the majority of its budget had been used. "While we are continually reviewing our spending to ensure we are achieving best value as part of good financial management, this does not mean that we will stop developing and investing in our plans for the future," a spokesperson said.
