Clare Balding is one of the UK's most respected broadcasters and has been a mainstay of the BBC's Olympic coverage, but things haven't always been easy for the TV star
The 2024 Olympic Games are well under way, and we're enjoying every moment of the thrilling sports action. Ensuring we're kept up to date with all the major highlights from the Paris Games on BBC, are seasoned presenters Clare Balding , Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan leading the coverage – despite being 'forced to abandon' their roles.
Clare is openly gay and met her wife, broadcaster Alice Arnold, in 1999 when they were both working for the BBC. Initially, they were just good friends but started dating in 2002, when a national newspaper publicly disclosed Clare's sexuality. "I said 'What do you mean? The invasion of my privacy or my lifestyle choice' and she said 'Both' and I didn't talk to her for about six months after that which was pretty difficult."
Before meeting Alice, the BBC Sport presenter had previously been in relationships with men and even received a marriage proposal from one of her ex-boyfriends. However, she declined the offer and has no regrets about it, especially after he went on to "behave appallingly".
