I write about consumer audio, computer accessories, Apple Macs, macOS and digital photography at Forbes. I love technology that makes life more fun, more creative and more productive. My mission is to hunt down and review the best products featuring innovative technology so you know what to buy.
Mission has been an iconic name in loudspeakers ever since the British brand first launched its legendary 770 loudspeakers way back in 1978. Two years later, the company followed up with the more compact Mission 700 cementing the brand as a dominant force in the British hi-fi industry.
Recently, Mission has been delving into its archive of speaker designs to reimagine its early successes, especially the 770 and 700 models. The revival of these classic British designs not only appeals to the nostalgic among us music lovers, but in their re-engineered form, these speakers are finding favor with a younger generation of audiophiles. This year sees the launch of another retro-inspired speaker the Mission 750.
If you’re imagining that the same effect could simply be achieved by turning a speaker upside down, think again. Mission says that every aspect of the industrial and mechanical design of a speaker needs precise calculations to ensure optimal positioning, spacing and alignment of the drive units. What’s more, the design of the crossover between the woofer and tweeter needs careful thought.
Mission’s early speaker designs focused on their midrange performance because that was where the bulk of hi-fi reproduction came from with vinyl records. Today’s digital sources and better-quality turntables demand just as good a performance from bass and treble as the midrange. The 750’s treble unit has a lightweight, damped, 28mm microfiber dome which Mission says has an ultra-smooth response.
