The defending champions hit five goals against St John's and were denied another handful by some excellent saves from Padraig Nugent
Cargin sealed their place in the quarter-finals as Group One winners following a facile 12-point victory over St John’s at Toome on Friday night.
However, the St John’s goalkeeper couldn’t prevent Pat Shivers from finding the net on five minutes, with Johnston providing the assist once more. After bouncing back from conceding two early goals, St John’s were left reeling by another brace of majors from the Toome men. The Johnnies fell nine back with early scores from McCann , Johnston and Shivers, but were awarded a penalty when Conall Quinn was dragged down by Sean O’Neill.
With both teams running their benches, the game was disjointed in the final 10 minutes and St John’s finally landed a score when Conor Johnston bounced back from the ground after a hefty challenge and drilled the ball into the Cargin net.
