A new study from appliance brand AEG has found that one in ten Brits didn't know washing machines can be affected by limescale.
A cleaning expert has shared a genius 30p hack that will destroy built-up limescale on your washing machine.
There are many things that can clean a washing machine including shop-bought solutions that are designed to break up bacteria and limescale. One way to sort out your limescale is to use lemon juice or white vinegar to break up the build-up. Bicarbonate of soda is another cheap and simple way to get rid of the built-up limescale in your machine. Simply add some to your clothes wash and it will destroy the build-up - as well as removing tough stains on your clothes and preserving the colour of your items.
Pricier energy bills may also be on the horizon if limescale builds up inside the appliance. Just 2mm worth of limescale build-up can increase a machine's energy consumption by 15 per cent, adding more to household energy bills. Michael Forbes, product specialist at AEG, said: "A quick maintenance wash should be done at least once a month to keep the machine in the best possible condition and ensure clothes come out looking their best. However, every 6 months it is important to descale a washing machine to clean the tub, the area you can’t see surrounding the metal drum, to remove any bacteria and limescale buildup.
