New analysis shows that universities thrived during the pandemic despite widely publicised predictions that their losses could be as high as $18 billion over five years.

“Nothing like the dire consequences they predicted justifies the rationalisation of staff. But universities always look out for opportunistic times when they want to do a degree of restructuring.”

The net outcome was that overall student enrolments fell by just 2.3 per cent between 2019 and 2021, ranging from a decrease of nearly 20 per cent at Charles Darwin University to an 11 per cent increase at the University of Sydney. Professor Larkins admits he and Mr Marshman were among the commentators who wrongly predicted a calamity for universities from the pandemic.
