Terminal Tower is one of the most recognized skyscrapers in Cleveland, even after more than 100 years since the construction project began. Take a look at the history of Terminal Tower.

Terminal Tower has since become an iconic landmark for Clevelanders, thanks to the Van Sweringen brothers who started excavating the land on Sept. 29, 1923. Terminal Tower was officially opened on June 29, 1930. It was the tallest skyscraper in Cleveland until Key Tower was completed in 1991.
To make the Terminal Tower a reality, a lot of decay needed to be razed. This process took 10 years to accomplish before construction could actually begin, McFarland said. The city saw 1,400 buildings razed in order to construct the tower in Public Square, she said. The buildings were made up of apartments, a church, breweries and more.
The Terminal Tower and the complex it is integrated with, often called “City Within a City,” included Hotel Cleveland, Higbee’s department store, the U.S. Post Office and more, she said. Terminal Tower itself had many businesses in it, including law offices, Southern Pacific Railroad and many office spaces.
“The brothers wanted to provide for the city a beautiful terminal that you could go with your family to go to visit relatives in Los Angeles or whatever; to hop on a train or get to and from work downtown,” McFarland said.
