Pastor Santiago took 19 News inside the church, showing the scars the fire left behind as the congregation looks to regroup and repair.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Slowly and gently, Ariel Santiago flips through the pages of a Spanish-language Thompson study bible, the only book that survived last week’s East 36th Street church fire.

He also guided 19 News downstairs, showing how the water from the fire hoses flooded the basement and left a mark at around shoulder level. He also stopped in a multi-purpose room, which had a balloon arch around a stage.Memories of a living, breathing church community were scattered all over the building. The kitchen was still full of food; costumes from previous plays and presentations were still in their closets; instruments were still standing in the same spot right before the fire.

For now, the rest of the congregation will meet at the Oasis de Bendición Pentecostal Church on the city’s West side.
