CMSD is seeking two tax increases to pay for operating expenses and capital upgrades.

Cleveland schools CEO Warren Morgan won preliminary board approval on Tuesday to seek two tax hikes on the November ballot. David Petkiewicz, cleveland.comCLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland Metropolitan School District is seeking two new tax increases this year – one for operating expenses, and a second for capital costs at district buildings.

If approved by voters, the total cost of both taxes, for an average Cleveland homeowner, would be roughly $254 per year. The first of the proposed new taxes is a 10-year, 8.6-mill operating levy. The owner of a $64,400 home – the median home value in the Cleveland school district – would pay roughly $194 more per year for the levy. The tax increase is expected to raise $52 million for the district over the next decade.

If approved, this will mark the second tax increase for Cleveland schools since 2020. That year, voters renewed an existing 15-mill operating levy originally passed in 2012, and also agreed to tack on 5 additional mills.
