The 155th Cleveland Police Training Academy boasts 52 new recruits, seven times the amount over the last class and surpassing the total size of the past four classes combined.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A brand-new police academy class has begun training in Cleveland, and it’s significantly larger than previous classes.

The initiative included raising starting pay for cadets from $15 to $24 per hour, offering $5,000 sign-on bonuses, and most notably, increasing the maximum age requirement for joining the force from 40 to 55. While 52 recruits may not seem like a large number, it represents a major step forward for the department, which has been struggling with recruitment and retention like many cities across the nation.
