Climate justice group Rising Tide has hit the waters at the Port of Newcastle with surfboards, kayaks and boats to kick off what is believed to be a 50-hour blockade to stop coal, gas and oil exports.
Rising Tide heads to Newcastle waters to kick off first day of blockade as heavy protesting continues to stop coal exports"Hundreds of kayaks and boats have launched from Horseshoe Beach to peacefully protest Newcastle coal port. We're here because this port exports coal that creates 1% of global emissions, while our government keeps approving new coal and gas projects," the group wrote in a Facebook post.
A spokesperson from the Port of Newcastle said the port was “operating as per the proposed shipping schedule”. A ship has been trying to enter the port since Friday morning but hundreds of activists geared up to continue the blockade. Picture: Facebook
