Closing arguments in the trial of Auburn police officer Jeff Nelson, who is charged with murder, began Thursday.

"A person shouldn’t lose their life just because they resisted while they were being arrested for a non-violent misdemeanor, disorderly conduct," Special Prosecutor Patty Eakes said. "That just isn’t reasonable, and it isn’t necessary." "Officers are trained if somebody goes for your gun, they are trying to kill you," Nelson's defense attorney, Kristen Murray, explained in court. "He followed his training, he followed the policies, he followed the law. Officers get to defend themselves just like the rest of us.""Mr. Sarey couldn’t have reached his gun if he even tried. The defendant knew he was in control of that weapon, and the weapon had never come out," Eakes said.
Jurors have heard more than a month of testimony from multiple eyewitnesses, as well as experts on police training, fingerprints, DNA, and video analysis. More than 100 pieces of evidence have been admitted into court, including video surveillance that captured the incident.Lawyers for Nelson quickly rested their cast Monday morning without calling on Nelson to testify even though his defense teamNelson's attorneys explained their decision to jurors during closing arguments.
