Jamie Darroch's dad took his own life when the Clydebank FC footballer's partner was nine months pregnant with their son. He has now spoken out on his experience in the hopes of encouraging others to reach out to their loved ones.
A Clydebank footballer whose life was turned upside when his dad took his own life has urged people to check in on their friends and loved ones.
"I headed home that night to my partner Stacey who was nine months pregnant at the time so as you can imagine, it was a really exciting time for the whole family, everybody hanging on every phone call. Everybody was really on edge, Stacey was obviously feeling a type of way as well that things were happening.
He continued: "My dad was a 50-year-old man, very well-respected in his line of work, was sought after all over the country for his work. Loved coming to watch us play football, loved our level of football and any time you spoke to anybody in the weeks and months after, he was incredibly excited about being a grandad for the first time.
"So that was the immediate timeline. The initial period after the three or four worst days of your life, I had a bit of a moment during the Tuesday - Jude's due date - and it was me and Stacey having a bit of down time in the house. It was the first time the house was a bit quieter. "Nine days later, Jude was born and it was obviously the best day of my life," he said. "That's the only time where I get a bit heavy with the situation. When I think about Jude and obviously the questions and conversations I'm going to have to have with him when he gets older.
"The gaffer was one of the first people I spoke to. I spoke to him the day after it happened and news filtered down through teammates, I got a message from every single one of them. Obviously I didn't feel compelled to answer but I knew that they were all here for me. "Ultimately, I didn't want this video to be about the person that's struggling, and people out there who are struggling," he said. "I think we need to look a wee bit more at ourselves.
"The alternative is what it leaves behind is grief, a soreness, heartbreak. It's so, so hard to describe what it leaves behind if we just make small changes.
