Belfast Crown Court told trial will include CCTV and body-warn footage material

A Co Down man accused of raping a sex worker at knifepoint is to stand trial in September on a total of four charges, a court heard today .

The 25-year old, from Oldtown Lane in Annalong, confirmed his identity to a court clerk and was then charged with possessing a bladed article with the intention of committing a sexual offence on August 15, 2023. When asked how he pleaded, Haughian replied “not guilty”. Judge Donna McColgan KC then enquired about the duration of the trial and was told by defence barrister Gavan Duffy KC that the hearing will take around a week.

Although no details of the alleged offences emerged during today’s arraignment hearing, a previous court heard that Haughian is accused of holding a knife to a sex worker’s throat and raping her at a pre-arranged meeting which was set up via an app for escort services. Haughian was released on continuing bail ahead of his trial.
