Harris's running mate used his keynote speech to deliver powerful messages on healthcare, housing, and reproductive freedomsByCHICAGO — It was the biggest speech of his political life so far, and if that wasn’t enough, it came hot on the heels of a series of addresses byBut Tim Walz used his keynote address to the Democratic National Convention to plug into his small town, humble roots, and instead of hyperbole, relied on sporting metaphors to get his message across.
A few weeks ago, most Americans probably had not heard of the man who for two decades taught high school geography and coached an American football and basketball team in a small town 100 miles from Minneapolis. Even now, plenty of people may not know the name of the Minnesota governor, or at least his story.
As a state governor, Walz might have had a short speaking slot at this same convention if Joe Biden had remained the Democratic Party’s candidate. But when Biden dropped out under intense pressure and endorsed his vice president, Harris found herself looking for her own running mate. On Wednesday, Walz, made use of a teleprompter to hammer home what he said were the stark dangers if Trump, 78, were to secure a second term as president.
The Harris has since said he misspoke when he was talking about training his men. Another attempt by the Trump campaign to attack Walz appeared to have backfired, after it emerged an open letter written by 50 Republican members of Congress, all of whom had served in the military, had included ranks some were not entitled to.
