More than 24 hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore, presumably killing six contractors on the bridge, the Coast Guard is now beginning the grim task of recovering the bodies.
The men were part of a group of contractors who were filling potholes on the bridge when the 985-foot cargo ship Dali hit one of the primary support beams, destroying the 47-year-old bridge almost instantly.The ship lost power a few minutes before impact, and it sent a mayday call that was able to alert the authorities in enough time to stop traffic from coming onto the bridge, averting further tragedy.
Containers hanging off ships, we have to make sure those are shored up. We're going to work with structural engineers to help them understand how to navigate and address the challenges of having bridge structure in the water that may be sharp that could puncture a suit, that could puncture an air line, all of these things we must take our time with,' said Maryland State Police Col. Roland Butler.
