The hole was around 12 to 15 feet deep
The HM Coastguard has issued a stark warning to people digging at the beach after an incident in Skegness. On Saturday, May 30, the HM Coastguard Skegness team was attending an incident on the beach when it was made aware of a huge hole that had been dug in the sand.
It was approximately three to four feet wide and around 12 to 15 feet deep. In a socila media post, the organisation said: "While digging on the beach can be great fun, large holes and tunnels can quickly become dangerous.
"Whoever dug this hole was incredibly lucky that it didn’t collapse in on them. "Sand is surprisingly heavy and can give way without warning, especially in deep holes. " It continued: "A collapse can trap someone beneath the sand and may lead to serious injury or even death. "Deep holes can also be a hazard to other beach users who may not see them.
" Those digging holes at the beach should make sure they are no deeper than waist height and the sides should be sloped instead of straight down. Tunnels and caves should not be dug in the sand, people should not be buried in the sand. Holes should also be filled in before leaving.
The statement adds: "It only takes a few minutes to fill a hole back in, and it’s a lot quicker than the time it took to dig it in the first place.
"Those few minutes could prevent a serious accident later in the day. "If you see anyone in difficulty on the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. "
