Coca-Cola has initiated a product recall in the UK due to potential excessive chlorate levels in select products, including Appletiser multipacks and certain Coca-Cola variants distributed to cafes and restaurants. Customers are advised not to consume affected products and to contact Coca-Cola for guidance.
Coca-Cola has announced a significant product recall in the UK due to concerns over potentially excessive levels of chlorate in certain products. The recall specifically affects multipacks of six 250ml cans of Appletiser 100% Apple Juice Gently Sparkling with specific batch codes and best before dates. Additionally, 330ml cans of Coca-Cola , Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Zero, and Sprite Zero, distributed exclusively to cafes and restaurants, are also part of the recall.
Standard size cans, as well as glass and plastic bottles sold in the UK, are not affected. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has provided detailed batch and production codes for the recalled products and urges consumers to refrain from consuming these drinks. This recall follows a similar action undertaken by the company just a day earlier in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Chlorate, a derivative of chlorine disinfectants used in water treatment for food processing, has been linked to potential health issues, particularly in children. It can interfere with the normal function of the thyroid gland. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an evening alert concerning the product risk, stating that while the risk is considered low for occasional consumers, adverse health effects cannot be completely ruled out, especially for sensitive individuals like young children and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Long-term chlorate consumption may inhibit iodine uptake, potentially leading to health issues like goitre. In cases of acute high intake, the body's ability to absorb oxygen from the blood could be compromised, potentially resulting in severe cases of kidney failure. Shoppers who have purchased any of the recalled products are advised not to consume them. Those who have the products are urged to contact Coca-Cola's helpline on 0800 227711 for guidance
