With a New Year comes crazy new wellness trends and while we can get on board with most of them - cockroach milk sounds pretty darn hard to stomach... 😳
How to choose among the zillion nondairy milks out there.Frida Harju-Westman, nutritionist at the global health app, Lifesum , explains that cockroach milk is only extractable from one type of cockroach - the Pacific beetle cockroach - and has many potential health benefits due to its nutritional content.
"The milk contains protein crystals, which contain a considerable amount of energy, much higher than that found in dairy milk from cows. The proteins are also packed with a large amount of essential amino acids, which is good for muscle repair. As the protein in the milk is digested, the crystals in the milk continue to slowly release protein. This slow absorption rate is known as a ‘time release’ protein and it ensures a steady stream of nutrients in to the body.
On a sustainability note, many experts argue that eating insects is a sustainable source of protein as they emit much less greenhouse gases and need less water than cows, for example. So if you're into saving the planet, this might be the wellness trend for you.
