Real life couple Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall's romcom is a sharp yet charming interrogation of modern romance, those conditions were a slightly chaotic med student flashing her nipple at a microbrewery owner who subsequently ran over a dog and whose surgery landed them with $12,000 worth of vet bills, a burgeoning relationship and a new pet who trundles around on a set of wheels. A classic love story..
In the heavily anticipated second series, we pick up with Ashley and Gordon having made one good decision and one bad one . A caper of an opening episode sees them attempt to get their pooch back all the while tiptoeing around the disabled dog in the room: does their relationship need Colin to survive? If the first season upturned rom-com tropes, the second unpicks the mystery of what happens next.
It is once again Dyer and Brammall’s easy chemistry that sells the series, but their supporting cast are given more to do this season. Gordon’s co-workers Chiara and Brett are back with their own crises: Chiara is having a fling with Megan despite being a married mother of three, while Brett’s at a stalemate with his parents who want him to move out.
Like the first series, the humour paves the way for some emotional heft, but even the darker elements come accompanied by a running joke about somebody wearing a really bad hat.may be named after a dog, but it is primarily concerned with the inescapable awkwardness of human interaction. Success may change some people but – one admirably restrained celebrity cameo aside – this show still feels like the gem it did the first time around.
