The arrests came a day after Columbia President Minouche Shafik testified before the House Education subcommittee for a hearing called “Columbia in Crisis.”
NEW YORK — New York Police Department officers on Thursday swarmed Columbia University’s campus and arrested dozens of pro-Palestinian student protesters as thousands of others shouted for them to stop — a scene of a campus in unmitigated chaos that drew in Cornel West and the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar.
The hostility that gripped the Upper Manhattan campus marked the largest escalation yet for a university that has been engulfed in tension since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war, and were the Ivy League school’s largest crackdown on student activism since protesters shut down the campus in 1968. The arrests at Columbia on Thursday are the latest evidence that prestigious universities are feeling more compelled to appease conservatives and other Israel supporters who have long criticized them for what they see as promoting progressive and sometimes anti-Zionist ideology.
Long-shot presidential candidate West appeared with student protesters, speaking to a cheering crowd that had gathered on another campus lawn after the arrests.On Wednesday, Shafik joined other top Columbia leadership to testify before the same House panel that had cost two other Ivy League presidents their jobs when they testified last year. Shethan her Ivy League counterparts, and emerged relatively intact.
