Could clock rule changes make college football games shorter? It's important to consider what happened in 2006.

“They scored with six minutes left, and the game was over before we had a chance to do anything,” Brown complained after the game. It might have sounded like sour grapes if many of Brown’s fellow coaches hadn’t been warning for months that time would fly once college football’s clock rule changes went into effect at the start of the 2006 season.

As time went by, coaches realized running at a blazing tempo all the time sometimes hurt their defenses — which also had to face more plays — than it helped their offenses. So they slowed down. The number of plays per game per team has dropped steadily since 2014. Last season, FBS teams averaged 68.7 offensive plays per team per game.

And despite what some of the most vocal college football traditionalists believe, borrowing from the NFL isn’t a bad thing. The NFL is the most popular sports entity in the nation — by a lot. Far more people watch the NFL than college football, and enough people watch college football to make it a multibillion-dollar business. Playing the same sport a little more like the entity that does the numbers to which you aspire isn’t a bad idea. The games will continue to look different.
