The specifics of what type of trial run will take place during bowl season are still under discussion among FBS conference administrators.
College football teams will be allowed to use coach-to-player communication technology in non-College Football Playoff bowl games this year, NCAA national coordinator of officials Steve Shaw told The Athletic on Monday. While the news comes , the bowl experiment was actually approved in the summer by the NCAA Football Rules Committee. CBS Sports first reported the approval last week.
The rules committee ultimately determined that such communication technology would have too much of an impact on on-field play compared with other conferences that did not use it, Shaw said, and could perhaps create issues such as inequitable comparisons between teams for College Football Playoff ranking purposes. The bowl experiment will be used as an information-gathering tool.
