The former Cal star finished his first two rounds with a 2-stroke lead at minus-11 with other top golfers still on the course.
Collin Morikawa strung together five consecutive birdies during his second round of the PGA Championship on Friday to zoom into a two-stroke lead at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
The 27-year-old Cal grad, who won the 2020 PGA crown, shot a 6-under 65 to rally from a tie for fifth place after Thursday’s opening round. He sank a long putt from just off the green for a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole.
His lead was three strokes — over Schauffele, Mark Hubbard, Thomas Detry and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler — until the 18th, where his run of birdies ended when he shot a bogey-5, his first bogey in a span of 32 holes.as he arrived at Valhalla in the morning. Fellow Cal grad Max Homa shot a 68 on Thursday but hadn’t teed off when Morikawa completed his round. Likewise, one-time Golden Bear Byeong Hun An, who shot even-par 71 in the first round, still was waiting to begin his second round.Jeff Faraudo was a sports writer for Bay Area daily newspapers since he was 17 years old, and was the Oakland Tribune's Cal beat writer for 24 years.
