Residents in Colne's Zone 5 are experiencing mounting frustration due to a backlog of uncollected waste. Severe weather conditions are cited as a contributing factor, but residents are concerned about the lack of communication and accountability from Pendle Council.

Residents in Colne 's Zone 5 are facing mounting frustration due to a backlog of uncollected waste. The last brown bin collection took place on December 6th, leaving residents with overflowing bins filled with tins, cans, and recyclables. Adding to the problem, grey wheelie bins containing general waste have not been emptied since December 28th, forcing residents to pile bags of rubbish in alleyways.

Christina Hooston, a resident on Hall Street, has lived in her home for over 30 years and has been deeply troubled by the situation. She states that the waste has been accumulating since before Christmas and she has been forced to make two trips to the local tip to dispose of her household waste. Local residents believe the severe weather conditions, particularly the steep, hilly streets, are hindering bin wagon access. Pendle Council has assured residents on social media that a team will be dispatched tomorrow (Wednesday, January 22nd) to collect the uncollected waste. However, many residents remain skeptical. Christina expresses doubt about the council's commitment, stating, 'I don't think they'll come. I've got bags of plastic in my back yard as well, because I thought whilst I'm waiting for them to come, I can ask them to get rid of that as well. There will be rats won't there? There's rats everywhere around here anyway.' James and Dana, another couple residing on the same street, share similar frustrations. They are particularly concerned about the lack of recycling collection, which has been disrupted since before the snowstorm. Their brown bin is overflowing with glass, tins, and cans accumulated during the Christmas period. They have witnessed animals tearing open bags of recycling left for collection, further exacerbating the problem. Jay Stansfield, another resident, highlights the widespread impact of the waste collection issues across various streets in Colne. He expresses concern about the increase in rats due to the overflowing bins and the lack of accountability on the part of the council. He emphasizes that residents are 'up in arms' about the situation and feel let down by the lack of communication and response from the council. David Walker, Assistant Director - Operational Services, acknowledged the challenges faced due to the severe weather conditions. He apologized for any inconvenience caused and assured residents that efforts are underway to catch up on missed collections. The council has been updating residents through its website and social media platforms regarding the progress made in addressing the waste collection backlog.
