Columbia sophomore, David Lederer, waves a large flag of Israel outside the student protest encampment on the campus of Columbia University, Monday, April 29, 2024, in New York. As part of the settlement, Columbia will create a “Safe Passage Liaison,” whose duties include serving as the main contact for students with safety concerns due to protests at the school, according to court documents. The liaison will also coordinate safety escorts for students upon request.
The escorts, which are part of the school’s Public Safety Escort Program, will also be made available 24/7 through Dec. 3, 2024 under the settlement. Students with safety escorts will be allowed “alternative access and egress points” to and from campus. The settlement also stipulates Columbia must allow students access to their belongings when they are restricted from being on campus due to disciplinary action. If students feel their academic work has been impacted by campus protests, they will also be allowed to seek accommodations from the university, according to the court documents.
The settlement closes by requiring the school display a “continued commitment to the academic tradition of free thought and open debate.”Fox News "we are pleased we’ve been able to come to a resolution and remain committed to our number one priority: the safety of our campus so that all of our students can successfully pursue their education and meet their academic goals.
